چکیده

In the game of baseball, the bat-ball collision is of great interest to both the fan and the scientist. The performance of baseball bats has been investigated and while there are plenty of ways of changing their performance, bats do not perform significantly different under different climate conditions. Baseballs, being made of a combination of cowhide, yarn and rubber, can change weight when exposed to a different humidity, which in turn can result in a change in performance of its collision with a bat. Additionally, during the course of a year, baseballs are exposed to a variety of outdoor temperatures. This paper will discuss the effect of temperature on the performance of a standard collegiate baseball. Using standardand high-speed COR testing methods, the effect of both heating and cooling of a baseball will be investigated. The results from the standard COR test show that there is only a slight increase in performance with the heating of a baseball to an elevated temperature beyond the extreme of what would be experienced in normal play. There is a much more significant change in performance when a baseball is cooled. The performance decrease can be as much as 4% when the ball is subjected to subfreezing temperatures. The results of this study will help the scientific spectator understand how the game might change under different temperature conditions.

Progress in measuring the performance of baseball and softball bats

The performance of baseball and softball bats has improved markedly over the past four decades. This has motivated many associations to develop test methods and measures to regulate bat performance. The present study reviews the progress of laboratory bat performance tests. The test involves an initially stationary bat that is allowed to recoil after being impacted by a ball. Bat performance wa...

Performance versus moment of inertia of sporting implements

A review is presented of the importance of the moment of inertia (MOI) to the performance of a sporting instrument. It is shown that for a given coefficient of restitution (COR), both the intrinsic power and the swing speed of a tennis racquet or baseball bat correlate strongly with the MOI about an axis through the handle and only weakly with the mass. It is further shown that for non-wood bas...

Preparation and Characterization of CA−PEG−TiO2 Membranes: Effect of PEG and TiO2 on Morphology, Flux and Fouling Performance

Modified cellulose acetate (CA) membranes were prepared by dissolving the polymers in a mixture of acetone (AC) and N, N dimethylacetamide (DMAc) (70:30) solvent and deionized (DI) water was used in the coagulation bath. The introduction of polyethylene glycol (PEG) additive and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) into the casting solution has changed the structures of the resulting membranes during the p...

Growth, Mortality and Stock Abundance of Venerid Bivalve, Paphia cor from Iranian Coastal Waters of Bushehr, Persian Gulf

In this study, population dynamics of venerid bivalve Paphia cor was investigated for a one-year period (2008-2009) in Bushehr shoreline areas (50˚ 40´ E- 29˚ 14´N) to estimate the stock abundance, growth parameters and natural mortality. Sampling was carried out bi-monthly by transects at random direction and zigzag pattern with duplicated quadrate (0.25 m2). The length frequency was ...
